The Santa Clarita Storm Soccer Club gave up a 2-0 lead and could not get control of the ball in the last 25 minutes of play as San Diego Boca tied the Storm 2-2 Saturday at Harry Welch Stadium.
It was the opening match of the season for both clubs.
The Storm got the scoring started in the second minute when Alex Harlley took a pass from team captain Stephen Martines and found the back of the net. Then in the 32nd minute, Martines battled for the ball inside the six-yard line and punched a shot that skated along the goal line past the unexpected keeper to put the Storm up 2-0.
Then in the second half, Storm defender Robbie Gouk fouled Boca’s Juan Bernal, who made the ensuing plenty kick to bring Boca to within one.
Boca started controlling most of the possession by the 80th minute, and with a minute left in extra time, Boca’s Bernal got his second goal of the game on a restart from the 18 and drilled it over keeper Steven Rodriguez for the final score.
The Storm next plays Saturday, April 14th against the Phoenix Monsoon at Harry Welch Stadium. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. with game time at 6:00. For more information, go to www.fcscprosoccer.com
