The City of Santa Clarita hosted an artist reception to welcome a new black and white photo collection to one of five Westfield Valencia Town Center art galleries Wednesday.
The collection titled “Beauty is a Bridge” is the work of Santa Clarita photographer Ted Dayton. It’s on display now at the Small Spaces, Big Stories Gallery located inside of the Westfield Valencia Town Center.
“Some are interesting because they’re ugly, some are interesting because they’re beautiful,” Dayton said about the bridges in the collection.
He spent four months on the project, a photograph collection of the bridges that cross the rivers in the Santa Clarita Valley.
For years Dayton had been looking for an excuse to dig out some of his old film cameras that were collecting dust in his closet.
“Mostly, I just wanted to use film cameras like I did growing up,” he said.
Dayton referred to the bridges as “timeless structures” that are great subjects for black and white film photography.
“They look the same now as they did years ago and will look the same 20 years from now. Rough concrete and metal subjects do really well on film,” he said.
“Beauty is a Bridge” will remain on display until September 18th. Half of all print sales will be donated to Single Mothers Outreach of Santa Clarita.

It’s a great exhibit. I highly recommend it. The film has a depth and character that digital can’t touch.
