This week’s Wendy’s of Santa Clarita and SCVTV Student Athlete of the Week is Kyle Strem of Golden Valley boys basketball. Kyle has a 3.8 GPA and scored 1680 on the SAT and 29 on the ACT. According to Kyle, doing well academically means more options later in life.
“(Good grades) open more doors,” said Kyle, a guard on the Grizzlies varsity basketball team. “Let’s say you have the little kid dream of making it in the NBA but you don’t get that far. Maybe you just want to own a business as you’re older. It helps open those doors to be successful later in life.”
His college choices are all in California and range from USC, to UC-Irvine to Cal State-Fullerton. The cost of education is certainly a factor, which is weighing on his choice.
“Probably Fullerton because it’s closer to the beach,” he said.
Kyle’s favorite subject is math, which means his course of study in college will be in the engineering and physics area. He’s not quite sure exactly what his major will be, but it will be in those sciences.
“I used to be really interested in robotics engineering,” Kyle said. “But there’s also software engineering too that’s been really popular.”
And his advice to young high school students?
“Stay in school and try your hardest,” Kyle said. “You never know what’s going to happen. (As an athlete) you could get injured, you may not have enough money to be part of the program. Academics is the ultimate equalizer.”
Congratulations to Kyle Strem of Golden Valley High School, the Wendy’s of Santa Clarita and SCVTV Student Athlete of the Week.
