Another brush fire in San Francisquito Canyon broke out Friday afternoon, roughly midway between LADWP’s Powerhouse 2 on the south and Powerhouse 1 on the north, where the Powerhouse Fire erupted in late May.
The point of origin of Friday’s fire was identified as 35702 San Francisquito Canyon Road. At that location are the remains of a structure that burned down in the 2002 Copper Fire. Next to it is a cave where youths are known to light candles while performing a ritual.
No official source has confirmed the cause of the fire, but from that location, the fire quickly spread north in 11-mph winds that were gusting to 24 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
As of 7:30 p.m. the fire had blackened roughly 80 acres, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. It was headed toward the area that already burned in the earlier Powerhouse Fire.
L.A. County Fire reported that there were 13 engines, six crews and four helicopters on scene to handle the blaze. Fixed-wing aircraft were also seen dropping phosphorus on the fire.
No additional structures were threatened as of 7 p.m. and no evacuations were ordered.
San Francisquito Canyon Road was closed at Copper Hill Drive on the south and South Portal Road on the north.
Apparent point of origin.
