The popularity of Netflix show “13 Reasons Why” is concerning mental health experts who are seeing copycat behaviors in Santa Clarita from the “revenge suicide” show.
While the show has a powerful and poignant message, it’s potentially dangerous if it’s not presented in the right context, or if the audience is already struggling with manic or depressive episodes, according to several local mental health experts.
The show is about protagonist Hannah Baker, who kills herself after enduring a series of humiliating moments. She leaves a series of 13 tapes for her friends and family.
The Santa Clarita Blue Ribbon Task Force on Suicide Prevention, which meets monthly at College of the Canyons Student Health Center, talked about the problems the show can create, as well as some of the powerful images it presents. Like most things, there’s a potential for it to lead to a powerful, important conversation — but those can often be uncomfortable conversations to have, the experts note.
