LASD_BadgeTHIS INCIDENT IS IN NO WAY RELATED TO THE ARREST MADE ON AUGUST 17, 2014 FOR THREATS MADE ON INSTAGRAM

[LASD] On Sunday, August 17, 2014, at approximately 8:00 pm Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Deputies received a call from a concerned resident reporting that possible threatening posts had once again been made on Instagram. The caller was concerned in light of recent social media activities where a teenager was arrested for posting threats to high school students online.

Deputies and detectives from the Santa Clarita Valley Station C.O.B.R.A. (Career Offenders Burglary Robbery Apprehension) Team immediately began an investigation. Deputies learned the caller was referring to one single Instagram post, posted by a local Canyon High School student. The post appeared to be a screen shot of a text message conversation that took place between the Canyon High School student and an unknown person. The text conversation included comments regarding school violence. A screen shot of the conversation was then posted on Instagram by the Canyon High School student.

Deputies interviewed the student and learned the student received the text from an unknown phone number and began engaging in a text message conversation with an unknown person. Not knowing who he was speaking to, the student decided to post a screen shot on his Instagram account instead of contacting law enforcement.

As the investigation progressed, detectives learned the unknown text message sender allegedly used an application (app) allowing him to send free text messages via the internet. The application allows users to receive a new phone number and send texts for free.

Through their investigation, detectives learned the identity of the text sender who initiated the text conversation and talks of school violence. The sender was identified as a 13-year-old Canyon High School student who was apparently friends with the other Canyon High School student, who received the text messages. Based on statements made by the suspect (13-year-old male), it appears he sent the text messages to get a reaction from his friend and as a practical joke. The suspect realized too late that the threats were being taken seriously, and his friend had posted them on Instagram.

The suspect was taken into custody and will be released into the custody of the Los Angeles County Probation Department.

THIS INCIDENT IS IN NO WAY RELATED TO THE ARREST MADE ON AUGUST 17, 2014 FOR THREATS MADE ON INSTAGRAM

Santa Clarita Valley Station would like to remind all those who use social media to do so with care. Parents should have an open dialog with their teenagers about the ramifications of posting photos and statements which might constitute a crime or cause other issues. Help your child use social media safely:

– Establish guidelines with your child before allowing him or her to use social media such as reviewing your child’s posts before posting.

– Ensure your child is using privacy settings.

– Caution your child about the dangers of posting inappropriate or provocative information or images. Once something is posted online, it cannot be taken back.

– Encourage your child to come to you if anything on a blog site or social media makes him or her feel uncomfortable.

    • Shanna IT IS NOT our youth fault. it’s Their [parents fault. today so many kid are stuck at home with nothing more than tv, video games and computers for company parents are dropping the ball .I understand Parents have to work to pa bills but come on you can do without fancy car and the bi screen tv.s we need to be there for our kids. So what if the car is 10 year old? doe it get you from point a to point b? is it paid for? great one less bill you need to be at work for to pay.Our kids need us there for them. they don’t stay kids very long. so why cant at least one parent be home when your kids get home from school? what happened to the grand parents helping? Come on people we need to get back to basics. todays kids have no self worth , no respect of other’s and could care less about authority of any kind. if we don’t stay more involved in our kids lives things like this article will become an every day occurrence. and how much longer will it be before it’s your child name in the article rather then OMG that’s someone I know???

  6. I was a sophomore and 13

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

  8. Some people just don’t learn. .

  9. This is out of hand. :(

  10. Some parents need to be more involved with there kids life and discipline their child a little more kids now days do what ever they want and their parents let them

  11. Hes 15… My friend knows the guy and all of the other articles say 15

  12. Coreen Smith says:

what in the world is going on ???? these kids are messing up there lives

  13. Ryan are you really arguing that? So you are telling me that my son isn’t in high school? Really??? His bday is next month and yes he is in 9th grade. And he didn’t skip a grade either. Where do you get your information from?

  15. Tommy Rini says:

Someone pissed in your gene pool

  16. Hey would all of you saying I’m wrong chill the hell out. Jesus, it was a mistake quit being so high strung.

  17. Especially you Shanna. Chill. I dont really care if your son is 13 and is in highschool.

  18. Man, oh, man!! These kids need a very stern wake-up call. If my kids (who are now all in their 30’s), had ever done anything like this, I would have really come down hard on them. I think that some parents today don’t even know what their kids are doing on all of their tech devices. It makes me mad that parents are not more involved. I know that not all parents are oblivious, but enough are that there are problems like this. UGHH!

  19. What a little sh**! I know we as parents can’t watch our children 24 hours a day, but let’s at least teach them how to be decent people!

  20. Parents are too busy on FB to worry about their own Kids! Im logging off :) NOW

  21. This is really, really disturbing. The fact that people are saying that there’s something wrong with us NOT going to make the situation any better. We need love and positive encouragement from our parents/peers, not an accusation on our generation. And its not all of us, sometimes kids don’t know how to deal with their emotions and things that they are dealing with at home. Not saying that this behavior is acceptable but these kids need feel the need to be heard. This is their way of getting the attention they want.

  22. Y’all need to chill and quit blaming the parents! He made a choice as an individual to be an idiot! This kid is a freaking highschooler you all are shifting the blame off of the kid onto the parents! Let the kid be a big boy and accept that he made a choice and now he’s reaping the consequences! Cut the cord and let the kid grow up!

  23. msc545 says:

    First Amendment. Free Speech.

People get arrested for *speech* ?

How long until before being “disrespectful” to the government gets a person arrested ?

  24. Parents need to get a handle on there kids. It is not a laughing matter. This is becoming a game to these kids. We are not laughing and only find it disgusting. Everyone needs to be aware of what is happening. If you hear something you know is wrong stand up and say something. Hoping kids start getting the message it’s not something to joke about even adults for that matter.

  25. Good- great job staying in it

  26. Dumb ass didn’t learn from the other dumb ass from the weekend????!!! Lmao!!!

  27. Parents, you need to ask yourself just how many Rated “M” extremely violent, mind-numbing video games you have allowed into your home (and I’m not talking Mario Brothers here) and grab a calculator and figure out how many hundreds or thousands of hours have you allowed the impressionable minds of YOUR children to be bombarded by these images! Then ask yourselves, when my child faces extreme emotional pressure, whether from bullying or verbal abuse or anything that maybe traumatic to a young teen….how will they cope with that pressure? For many children of this “Lost Generation”, the only coping mechanism they have been taught, is thru their thousands of hours of intensive combat training ie: Senseless murder, rape and be-headings…
    is to Shoot, Shoot, Shoot!!!

  28. I guess what I am saying is, repetition is the key to who you will become (physically and emotionally). If you take part in visual killings every single day of your life… chances are, you will have a skewed image of who you are and how you will handle the extreme pressures of adolescence. I’m not placing blame on anyone here. I just think it’s time to heighten our awareness. I do know one thing though…the answers to life are not death, but to some children, that’s the only answer they’ve ever been fed. All Day…Every Day!
