Faust
California Institute of the Arts rocks out for the second concert in the 2012–13 Wild Beast Concert Series. For Art/Rock/Orchestra, the Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts presents an evening of orchestral rock featuring Faust, Derde Verde and the CalArts Orchestra.
Art/Rock/Orchestra takes place on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012 at 7 p.m. at the Wild Beast’s S. Mark Taper Foundation Courtyard on the CalArts campus in Valencia, California. Concert admission is free. Advance registration is suggested. Festivities begin with pre-concert options for al fresco dinners provided by classic Los Angeles food trucks.
Highlights of the evening under the stars include The CalArts Orchestra playing rock-orchestral works; Derde Verde, a trio of CalArts alums, called “the closest thing Los Angeles has to its own Radiohead right now” by the L. A. Reader; and a set by the legendary, highly influential Faust, ur-krautrock once described by Melody Maker as a “radical mix of musique concrète, Stockhausen, the Velvet Underground, and moments of almost pastoral beauty.”
About the bands:
Faust: Krautrock pioneers Zappi Diermaier, Jean-Hervé Péron and company created music in the ’70s that sounds like it was made yesterday. They improvised with industrial noise, generated bizarre hypnotic grooves, indulged in shockingly willful collages, dabbled with every conceivable musical genre, found time for bursts of satirical pop and waves of delicate ambience, and along the way, revolutionized studio music production. For Art/Rock/Orchestra, original members Diermaier and Péron are joined by longtime collaborators Amaury Cambuzat of Ulan Bator and Geraldine Swayne.
Derde Verde: Indie-rockers Derde Verde craft colorful, chameleon-like song structures sprinkled with noise, analog electronics, melodic guitar lines and rhythmic twists. The L.A.-based band named themselves after Val Verde, a rural valley town of coyotes, rolling hills, and big sky, an hour north of the city, and right outside Santa Clarita.
The CalArts Orchestra: Coached by CalArts faculty member Ulrich Krieger, an accomplished composer and musician who has collaborated with Lou Reed, Lee Ranaldo and Merzbow, and lead by Mark Menzies, the CalArts Orchestra will play original works by Krieger, CalArts students and alumni, and perform compositions by Richard Wagner and Sunn 0))).
CalArts’ Wild Beast music pavilion was cited as one of the “most beautiful outdoor theaters in the world” by Flavorwire. With open lawn seating, families are welcome and picnics encouraged at Santa Clarita’s most intimate outdoor concert setting.
