Tommy Aquino 1Superbike racer Tommy Aquino, a graduate of Saugus High School, died Sunday in a crash at the Piru MX Park, authorities said.

He was 21.

According to his Facebook page, Aquino raced dirt bikes as a small boy then switched to street bikes at age 10. At age 16 he was named AMA Rookie of the Year and then signed as a factory rider with Yamaha for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. In 2012 he competed at Daytona and Laguna Seca, as well as a full season in the Spanish National championship. Last season he raced in the British Superstock Series on Team WD40.

According to authorities, shortly before 12:30 p.m. Sunday a caller reported a head-on collision between two motorcyclists at the track in the 4300 block of Center Street.

One rider was taken to a hospital by helicopter. Aquino was pronounced dead at the scene, according to reports.

Aquino’s death has been confirmed by his family.

Aquino’s website simply shows a black ribbon with the No. 31.
