Students at Sierra Vista Junior High School will be involved in paying tribute to our fallen heros and victims of 9/11 on Friday, Sept. 9.
The purpose of the exercise is to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of 9/11. Within the history classes, students will participate in class discussions relating to the tragic events of that fateful day. We will discuss the heroism of not only those close to the events, but of our many brave service men who still fight today.
On Thursday, students completed a discussion link answering topics including: “Freedom means to me…” “I’m proud to be an American because…” or “I dedicate this link to…” (perhaps a family member or friend serving in the armed forces).
During F period RELAX on 9/9, students and teachers can link their red, white and blue slips into a chain to “unite.” During the last 10 minutes or so of RELAX, Principal Markrd will come on the all-call and say a few words about the 9/11 tragedy. Students will then proceed outside their classrooms and hold up their chains or slips and we will observe (as a united entity beyond teenage differences and struggles) a moment of silence to remember our heroes of 9/11. Here, students will see a united campus, painted with our nation’s colors. The links collected by teachers with messages will then be converted into an American Flag display on our campus.
