Jason Logan tallied a game-high 16 points and Devin Dyer added 11 more to lead The Master’s College past William Jessup 60-52 Saturday evening in Rocklin.
The victory snapped a two-game losing streak and improved the Mustangs to 6-3.
Logan (Spartanburg, SC) started quickly, scoring four of his team’s first six points and the final two put the Mustangs in front to stay 6-5. It was part of an eventual 8-2 run and preceded another burst by the Mustangs, this one of the 9-2 variety, that built the lead to 17-9 at the 10:36 mark of the opening half. A Logan Quinn (Little Rock, AR) three-pointer sparked that burst and Dyer closed it out with a jumper.
That was the largest lead the Mustangs would enjoy during the first half because the Warriors stayed resilient, getting as close as 25-23 on a Kevin Stanley jumper with 2:31 remaining. However, the Mustangs finished out the half in solid fashion, turning to Logan and Dyer for the final five points and a seven-point margin at intermission.
Led by Logan’s 5-6 accuracy (11 points) from the field, the Mustangs shot a solid 57% (13-23) from the field in the first half while limiting the Warriors to 42% accuracy.
That half-ending skein was just the beginning for the Mustangs who carried it over into the early moments of the final half, scoring the first seven points to surge ahead 37-23. Lance Reeves (Visalia, CA) ignited the run with a three-pointer, Dyer added a jumper, and Logan capped it with a basket at the 16:09 mark.
The Mustangs enjoyed a double-digit cushion for nearly four minutes before the Warriors chopped it to 41-32. Reeves countered with another three-pointer but the Warriors kept coming. Sparked by a Ben Chung jumper, the Warriors outscored the Mustangs 11-2 over the next 4:11 to slice the deficit to 46-43.
A pair of Dyer free throws put an end to the skein and spurred an 11-3 burst that put the game in the win column for the Mustangs. Reeves’ third and final trey with 55 ticks left on the clock capped the deciding run.
Logan, whose game-high total was built on 8-9 shooting from the field, and Dyer may have been the only Mustangs in double figures but they got plenty of help from Reeves and Derrick Fain (Dallas, TX) who tossed in nine points apiece. Fain also handed out a game-best four assists while Logan pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
After splitting a pair of contests on their brief Northern California trip, the Mustangs return to Bross Gym on Tuesday evening when they host Cal Tech in a 7 p.m. start.
