[KHTS]- Santa Clarita Track Club’s Students Off And Running program participants are inviting the community to participate in the Be The Light 5K to honor the life of a woman recently found dead in Newhall.
Jazmin Gonzalez, 22, of Newhall, was found in a car parked on the street in the Happy Valley area on Thursday evening.
Gonzalez competed in the Los Angeles Marathon as a Santa Clarita Track Club’s Students Off And Running, or SOAR, program participant in 2011.
SOAR is a program which helps youth in need living in Santa Clarita build life skills and establish healthy relationships with peers and adults through training for and completing a marathon, according to the website.
“Very sad to share the loss of one of our own,” said SOAR officials in a Facebook post. “Jazmin (was) an incredibly gifted and truly inspirational young woman. She will be deeply missed by all.”
SOAR is inviting the Santa Clarita community for “a night of friendship and remembrance in celebration” of Gonzalez at a 5K on Sept. 26.
The community is invited to register for the Be The Light 5K on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at the West Creek Park, located at 24247 Village Circle Drive, Valencia.
The community can get 10 percent off of the 5K registration by using the promo code “SOAR-10.”
The 5K course is a loop that encompasses both sides of the San Francisquito Creek Trail between Copper Hill Drive and Decoro Drive, according to the website.
Virtually the entire course is on the paved and fenced San Francisquito Creek Trail.
Around the half-mile mark, there is a steep but very short, about 30 yards long, grade to get from the trail to the bridge at Decoro Drive; otherwise, no hill climbing.
The course is mainly flat. On the final mile, there is a slight downhill path, according to the website.

  5. Not that it matters but did she commit suicide? It seems as though a lot of young adults and teens are commuting suicide in our community and maybe we need to start reaching out to that age group

    i never got the chance to mean jazmin but I do work and am friends with her sister. I can only imagine the feeling and loss her sister is dealing with. I know my daughter and I will be there in honor of Jazmin and in support for her sister Joanna.
