The College of the Canyons women’s volleyball team faced its toughest competition so far this season, with the Cougars squaring off against No. 2 Grossmont College at the annual El Camino College Quad tourney on Friday.
Canyons (6-2) dropped its first match of the day to Grossmont 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-21), before coming back to sweep San Diego Mesa 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-23) in the afternoon game.
The Cougars started the weekend as the No. 14 team in the state, but have since moved up in the rankings to the No. 11 spot, according to the most recent statewide coaches poll releases on Monday. Likewise, Grossmont is now the No. 1 ranked team in the state.
In the match against the Griffins, sophomore Ashley Sergent led Canyons with six kills. Freshman Emily Burns andDaniella Villano recorded four kills apiece. Sam Nua had five kills and two aces.
Canyons was able to bounce back vs. San Diego led by 13 kills and three aces from Burns. Villano finished the second game with 11 kills and four digs.
Demi Dawson led the Cougars with 10 digs, while Rachel Perez tallied 32 assists to go with two kills and an ace.
No. 11 Canyons will next host San Bernardino Valley College at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, in the Cougar Cage.
