The College of the Canyons men’s soccer team claimed its biggest win of the season on Tuesday, coming in the form of a physical 2-1 victory over Santa Barbara City College at Cougar Stadium.
Canyons (3-5-1) received an impressive performance from sophomore goalkeeper Cristian Arriaga who recorded 10 saves in helping the Cougars to victory.
SBCC outshot the Cougars 22-11 in a physical match that also featured a combined 30 fouls and seven yellow cards.
Also included in the game were three first-half goals which all occurred within the opening 16 minutes of play.
In the eighth minute, freshman forward Joshua Ausherman netted his second goal of the season on an unassisted score that ignited the home crowd and gave Canyons a 1-0 lead along with the early momentum.
Less than two minutes later, the Vaqueros answered back with a goal by freshman Kevin Kwizera that evened things up at 1-1.
The final scoring play of the match came in the 16th minute, with COC freshman forward Jose Ruiz booting a ball to the back of the net on an unassisted goal that would eventually give Canyons its third win of the season — while simultaneously handing SBCC (5-4) its third straight loss.
The score was the second of the season for Ruiz, which ties him with Ausherman for the team lead. Ruiz also leads the Cougars with five points.
