The California League announced Monday that Lancaster JetHawks infielder Brendan Rodgers has been named the California League Player of the Week and pitcher Jesus Tinoco has been named the California League Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 8-14.
This marks the first weekly awards sweep for the JetHawks since the week of May 27-June 2, 2013 when outfielder Preston Tucker and right-hander Brady Rodgers were named California League Player and Pitcher of the Week.
Rodgers hit .560 (14-for-25) over six games with two home runs, including a grand slam, and nine RBI. The 20-year-old added five doubles, a triple and scored nine runs to help the JetHawks to a 5-1 record and season-best five-game winning streak. The third-overall pick of the Rockies in 2015, Rodgers is currently riding a 12-game hitting streak during which he is batting .500 (25-for-50). He is currently hitting .418 with a 1.119 OPS over 19 games this season.
Tinoco’s award comes on the heels of a near-perfect outing last Thursday against Modesto. The right-hander from Venezuela retired the first 20 batters he faced in Lancaster’s one-hit shutout. He pitched a season-high seven innings, allowing just the one hit with four strikeouts to pick up his first win. He didn’t walk a batter. Tinoco, 22, was making just his third start of the season after missing most of the first month due to injury. He’s 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA overall through three starts and is next scheduled to pitch on Tuesday night at Modesto.
Lancaster’s first weekly award honor of the season came last week (May 1-7) when outfielder Sam Hilliard was named the California League Player of the Week.
