Colin Welmon allowed just one run and struck out a career-high nine but was outdueled as the Lancaster JetHawks lost, 1-0, to the Inland Empire 66ers on Friday night at San Manuel Stadium.
The JetHawks (22-20) were shutout for the second time this season and the loss dropped them into a second-place tie with the 66ers (22-20) in the South Division.
Welmon (3-1) allowed the game’s lone run in the third inning. Jake Yacinich reached on an infield single and scored on Kyle Servance Jr.’s triple. The right-hander allowed 1 run on three hits over his six frames with nine strikeouts and two walks. His previous high of eight strikeouts came as a member of the Modesto Nuts last August against the JetHawks.
Jaime Barria (3-3) tossed seven scoreless innings for the 66ers, allowing just two hits. He struck out four without issuing a walk. Barria has now allowed four hits over 14 scoreless innings in two starts against the JetHawks this season.
The game marked the second time Welmon and Barria had started against each other this season. Welmon allowed only one run over seven innings in his first outing.
Yonathan Daza (10 games), Wes Rogers (nine games), Garrett Hampson (eight games) and Sam Hilliard (seven games) all went hitless to end their hitting streaks.
Greyfer Eregua pitched two scoreless innings to pick up his third save.
Lancaster’s best chance to score came in the eighth inning against Eregua. With runners at first and third and two outs, the JetHawks attempted to pull off a double steal. Wilson Soriano arrived at second base safely, but Mylz Jones was thrown out at home plate.
The series continues on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Peter Lambert (2-3) is scheduled to start for the JetHawks against Jose Rodriguez (4-2) at San Manuel Stadium.
