RANCHO CUCAMONGA – Garrett Hampson totaled four hits and the Lancaster JetHawks outhit the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes but lost, 11-4, on Tuesday night at LoanMart Field.
The game started inauspiciously in the first inning. Garrett Hampson led off with a bunt single but was caught stealing second base, and Yonathan Daza followed with a single but was thrown trying to stretch it to a double.
The Quakes (56-46, 20-12) scored an unearned run on a wild pitch in the first inning and added three runs in the third inning on four doubles to take a 4-0 lead.
Lancaster answered with three runs in the fourth inning. Sam Hilliard led off with a solo home run, his team-leading 13th of the season, and Chris Rabago later doubled in two runs with two outs.
Starter Jesus Tinoco (7-4) was unable to keep the JetHawks within a run. Ariel Sandoval led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run and the Quakes added another run on an Omar Estevez RBI-triple in the fifth.
Tinoco allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits over five innings and suffered his third consecutive loss.
Carlos Polanco relieved Tinoco in the sixth and loaded the bases on two walks and a single before Brendon Davis delivered a three-run double to push the Quakes ahead, 9-3. Davis totaled five RBI in the game.
The Quakes totaled nine extra-base hits in the game, a season-high against JetHawks pitching.
Rancho starter Devin Smeltzer (4-3) allowed 11 hits but only three runs over 6.1 innings. He struck out a season-high 10 batters, becoming the first pitcher to strike out 10 or more JetHawks since Stockton’s A.J. Puk struck out 12 on June 3.
Hampson reached on an infield single in the ninth inning for his fourth hit and his second four-hit game of the season. Avery Romero added three hits including a double, and Daza went 2-for-4 to record his 44th multi-hit game of the season.
Here’s the box score.
The clubs will wrap up the series with a rubber game tonight at LoanMart Field. Brandon Gold (3-0) starts for Lancaster against Andrew Thurman. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
