1998 - As disbelief about El Niño was starting to set in, the first of a month-long succession of devastating storms hits [story]
winter storm

Chad O'MeliaA former Santa Clarita Valley resident who worked at a Valencia accounting firm from 2010 to 2013 was found dead in his apartment in Thousand Oaks on Monday, the victim of an apparent homicide, according to authorities.

Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a disturbance on Meagan Place in Thousand Oaks Monday morning about 1:15 a.m., according to a statement from department Captain Garo Kuredjian.

Once on the scene, deputies found Chad O’Melia, 26, deceased, with multiple wounds to his body.

The manner and cause of death is under investigation by the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Deputies also discovered a 27-year-old woman inside the residence with significant injuries that required immediate medical attention. The woman, not identified by authorities, was transported to Los Robles Regional Medical Center for treatment and was reported in stable condition on Tuesday.

The investigation is ongoing; however, investigators are not looking for any outstanding suspects, Kuredjian stated.

“We don’t have any additional information at this point that we’re releasing,” Kuredjian told SCVNews Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. “Our Major Crimes investigators are going over the interviews and following up on the evidence they obtained at the scene. It’s considered a very active investigation.”

Eyewitnesses told the Thousand Oaks Acorn they saw a bloody female being rolled away from the apartment after the incident.

O’Melia was a graduate of California State University, Chico and was pursuing a career in accounting.

He was an accountant at Disabatino CPA in Camarillo at the time of his death. He had joined the firm in September 2017, just after receiving his Bachelor’s degree in accounting from California State University, Chico.

According to O’Melia’s bio on the company’s website, he was pursuing his certification as a public accountant, and was an avid fan of boxing.

While attending CSU Chico, from May 2014 to May 2015, O’Melia was a member of the Sigma Nu International fraternity and served as its treasurer.

The following comes from O’Melia’s LinkedIn profile:

“During my tenure as my fraternity’s Treasurer, we had just over $300 in our bank account with just under $2,200 debt and over $2,800 in outstanding fraternal dues owed by members for previous years.

“I constructed a very strict budget in which allowed me to lower our fraternal dues without having to sacrifice any formals, dances, dinners, philanthropy, or community service events, but most importantly motivate the Chapter to pay their outstanding dues as well as current ones.

“At the end of my tenure as Treasurer, I handed my successor with $2,300 in our bank account, $0 dollars in debt and only $780 in outstanding fraternal dues.”

O’Melia was also active in his community as a fraternity member, volunteering at the Chico Wildlife Sanctuary, walking for Breast Cancer fundraisers, picking up trash and more.

Previously, from June 2010 to June 2013, O’Melia was a staff accountant at MYBL Accounting Services, Inc. in Valencia:

“I worked for MYBL Accounting Services, Inc. under Sam Cho, CPA for a total of three years,” O’Melia’s LinkedIn profile reads.

“As a Junior Account my responsibilities entailed overseeing the complete bookkeeping and payroll for 87 clients, training and motivating new interns, reconciling all of the interns bookkeeping, communicate with the IRS and FTB upon my clients’ behalf, maintain constant communication with our Senior Accountant and the CPA in regard to our clients’ financial standings, and lastly represent the Firm during monthly networking meetings.

“By my third year at the Firm, I was able to completely integrate our clients’ QuickBooks, Excel and Lacerte files which greatly increased our Firm’s overall payroll tax service efficiency while lowering possible human error when making various calculations.

“I have strong confidence in my ability to take on any rigorous schedule that is required of me, as I have had first-hand experience in balancing numerous challenging tasks. Managing a $150,000 budget as the Treasurer while pursuing my BA in Accounting is what gave me the confidence to take on many strenuous tasks at once.”

This is a developing story. More information will be added as it becomes available.

Correction: Melia’s last-known SCV residence was in Newhall; the story has been updated.
