The heat wave baking Southern California scorched a 48-year-old record for the hottest July 6 in the Santa Clarita Valley on Friday afternoon.
The National Weather Service reported the SCV temperature at 113°F as of 3 p.m. Friday, melting the previous SCV high of 105°F set on July 6, 1970, according to Intellicast.
Local residents reported even higher unofficial temperatures, including a 118°F dashboard reading on Soledad Road in Canyon Country.
The service had predicted the high might get to 116°F on Friday afternoon.
The highest recorded temperature in July in Santa Clarita in recent times has been 46°C, or 115°F, and the lowest 15°C, or about 59°F, according to Weather2.
The NWS has a red flag warning in effect through Saturday afternoon and an excessive heat warning in effect through Saturday night. A wind advisory for late Friday afternoon into Friday night has also been issued.
The service predicts Saturday’s high will be 106°F, Sunday’s 102°F and Monday’s 99°F.
