SACRAMENTO — The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on Friday denied the Trump Administration’s attempt to block California’s lawsuit challenging the citizenship question on the 2020 Census.
The case of State of California, et al. v. Ross, et al. will now go to trial in January.
“Today’s ruling allows us to move forward in our fight to ensure a fair and accurate 2020 Census,” California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said Friday.
“President Trump’s unconstitutional decision to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census goes against the spirit and purpose of a nonpartisan census process,” Becerra said.
“Across the nation, the Census count helps determine the resources needed to build stronger, safer, more prosperous communities,” he said. “We have much at stake, including the vital services that our communities rely on every day: schools, roads, public transportation, and crucial resources for health and safety. We will ardently defend the right of Californians to participate without fear in a fair and accurate 2020 Census.”
