College of the Canyons‘ volleyball team was able to stop a four-game skid with an exciting come-from-behind victory over No. 12 state-ranked Moorpark College on Wednesday.
Set scores were 19-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-19.
Playing at The Master’s University gymnasium in its first home match of the 2019 season, the Canyons team fell behind early on and dropped the opening set before eventually getting into a productive rhythm.
Canyons (3-5) went on to win the next three sets in what played out to be a very intense battle between two very talented programs.
Moorpark (4-3) entered the match as the No. 12 ranked team in the state and looked very much the part in the early goings, with the Raiders jumping out to an early lead and forcing the College of the Canyons head coach to use a time out in hopes of regrouping his team.
Though a comeback wasn’t in the cards for the opening set, the Canyons players got on track fairly quickly after the two teams switched sides.
Freshman Kayla Tait led Canyons with 11 kills and rounded out the stat sheet with four aces and 13 digs.
Sophomore middle blocker Grace Ferguson recorded 10 kills and three aces in the game. Bree Kelley and Madison Martinez added eight kills apiece.
Caitlin Lim had a major impact with her five aces, including three in a row during the second set.
Elizabeth Gannon led COC with 29 digs and Sydney Higginson ended the night with 37 kills and six digs.
Canyons next will travel west to face Ventura College at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20.
