The Valley Industry Association will present an active shooter awareness training session as part of its monthly business luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Valencia on Tuesday, Aug. 21, starting at 11:45 a.m.

Attendees will learn how to recognize potential workplace violence indicators, the actions to prevent and prepare for potential active shooter incidents, and how to manage the consequences of an active shooter incident.

Presenters will include Jenny Ketchepaw, vice president and training manager for Community Bank, and a representative from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“Active shooter preparedness is important now more than ever,” Ketchepaw said. “While we hope we never have to use the information, the more prepared we are, the better we are in helping our employees, our friends and our families.

“After the horrific active shooter incident in San Bernardino in 2015, (Community Bank) knew we needed to better prepare our employees,” she said. “We immediately went into action developing our Active Shooter Program, which included updating our Emergency Evacuation Plan to include what to do in case of an Active Shooter Incident. We also began immediately rolling out training to all our staff. In looking at resources, we discovered that FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security had tremendous resources available to us. We utilized their materials in conjunction with a powerful video to provide our employees with as much information as possible.”

Ketchepaw engaged the local Sheriff’s Station to view the bank’s training, emergency plan and active shooter procedures.

“We found that we were one of very few businesses leading the charge in this important area,” she said. “It is our sincere hope that our employees never need to use this training.”
