With so much attention being paid to Trevor Bauer’s major league debut and first major league win on Sunday – over the Los Angeles Dodgers, no less – his former teammate at Hart High School has been on the precipice of the big leagues for a couple years.

Michael Montgomery was taken in the Supplement First Round right out of Hart by the Kansas City Royals in 2008, and now is a starter with the triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers of the Pacific Coast League.  At the all-star break, Montgomery is 3-6 in 17 starts, with an ERA of 5.69 in 91.2 innings pitched.

He is currently ranked by MLB.com as the 31st overall prospect in minor league baseball.

During the Spring of 2008, Montgomery and Bauer were the two starters for the Hart Indians, leading the team to a 23-7 record and a Foothill League championship at 14-1.  Montgomery was 8-2 that year with a 1.41 ERA.  Bauer was 12-0 with a 0.79 ERA and two saves.

Casey McCarthy, who was drafted this year by the Miami Marlins in the 28th round out of Cal State San Bernardino, was also a pitcher on that Indians team in 2008.

Montgomery, a senior in 2008, was taken by the Royals with the 36th overall pick that June.  Bauer, then a junior, graduated early from Hart the following December, foregoing his senior season with the Indians so he could begin his collegiate career with the UCLA Bruins.

In 2011, Montgomery was 5-11 with a 5.32 ERA in Omaha, and he started and won the Triple-A championship game for the Storm Chasers.  He ranked third in the PCL with 129 strikeouts.
