Stevenson Ranch: Public Safety and Crime Information Report for the Week of February 15, 2016

Burglary – 25300 block of The Old Road. Person(s) unknown smashed the rear window of the victim’s vehicle and stole a backpack containing a laptop computer.

Burglary – 25200 block of The Old Road. Person(s) unknown smashed the rear window of the victim’s vehicle and stole a soft dog carrier.

Burglary – 22100 block of Sierra Highway. Person(s) unknown cut the lock to the gate of the location and then broke into two vehicles, stealing several power tools.

Attempted Vehicle Theft -25300 block of The Old Road. Person(s) unknown attempted to steal the victim’s motorcycle by drilling out the ignition switch.

Petty Theft -25900 block of The Old Road. After dining at a restaurant, the victim accidentally left without her purse. After she remembered she had left the purse and returned to the restaurant, it was no longer on the chair where she had left it. Restaurant employees said that no one had turned a purse in.

Tip of the Week: Preventing Vehicle Thefts
“Smash and grabs” are a common problem all over the country. Thieves look into your vehicle for anything of interest, smash the window, then grab what they can and run. This can be a very expensive inconvenience to the victim. Here are some tips to prevent yourself from becoming a victim.

1. Never leave purses, laptop computers, cell phones, GPS devices, etc, in your vehicle where they are in plain view. If you cannot take them with you, then store them in the trunk and out of view.

2. Never leave items of interest such as gym bags, backpacks, unmarked boxes, or packages in your vehicle where they are in plain view. Even though a thief does not know what these items contain, they make take the risk to steal them.

3. When parking at night, try to park in a well-lit area to deter thieves.

4. Consider using a car window sunshade in your vehicle, even at night or in parking structures. This makes it far more difficult for a thief to look into your vehicle for anything of interest.
