Drake Hougo

Santa Clarita’s Central Park now features a healthy fitness zone thanks to more than a year and a half of hard work and planning by Drake Hougo, an Eagle Scout Candidate and member of Boy Scout Troop 2222.

Hougo approached the City of Santa Clarita in October 2010 with the idea of constructing “Fitness Island,” an outdoor fitness zone at Central Park similar in style to the Healthy Santa Clarita Fitness Zone constructed at the City’s Sports Complex.  After more than a year of planning and fundraising, Hougo and a team of volunteers installed the new fitness equipment at Central Park Memorial Day weekend, providing a free workout alternative to residents.

“We were impressed by Hougo’s Fitness Zone concept and felt it would be a great addition to Central Park, allowing even more residents the opportunity to get out and enjoy a healthy lifestyle,” said Parks, Recreation and Community Services Director Rick Gould.  “We are extremely proud of all he has accomplished and believe residents will enjoy his hard work for years to come.”

The new fitness zone includes 11 pieces of outdoor fitness equipment, such as push-up bars, leg press, sit-up bench, etc., and is located next to the basketball courts.

In total, Hougo raised more than $13,000 and secured in-kind services through sponsorship from local businesses, taking his project from concept to reality.  Parks planning staff worked with Hougo throughout the entirety of his project to identify a suitable location, review equipment manufacturer information, identify additional donations in the form of in-kind services, and develop a project plan with all the steps required for him to complete the project.  For more information about the new Fitness Zone at Central Park, visit http://mrhougo.com/Drake_Hougos_Eagle_Project/Welcome.html.
