Olympian and Canyon High grad Alysia Montano earned the first indoor title of her career Sunday in Boston where she won the USATF 2015 Indoor National Championship 600 meter dash in 1:26.59.
The championship comes six months after giving birth to her baby girl Linnea.
This was Montaño’s third race since becoming a mother last August, but the first time she has raced in a U.S. National championship since last June when she was eight months pregnant.
Montaño returned to the USATF in convincing fashion by winning her qualifying heat and running the third fastest time overall.
This put her in position to go up against rival Ajee Wilson, who took the crown as the 800 meter champion during Montaño’s pregnancy.
From the gun, Montaño and Wilson were stride for stride with each other for the first 200 meters.
It was 50 meters later that the race changed dramatically when Wilson’s heels were accidentally clipped by another runner, causing her and two other runners to fall.
Montaño finished one second ahead of second place finisher Phoebe Wright.
