College of the Canyons men’s golf took first in its first Western State Conference event of the season, with the Cougars taking both team and individual medalist honors at Oakmont Country Club on Monday, Feb. 9.
Canyons (22-1) was led by sophomore and event medalist Jacques Struyf with an even par round of 71 which led the field of 48 individuals representing the eight participating schools.
Struyf’s low round highlighted the Cougars’ four-player score of 297, which outpaced the field by 17 strokes.
Bakersfield, Citrus and tourney host Glendale College each finished at 314 in a three-way tie for second. Ventura College (316) and Santa Barbara City (316) tied for the No. 5 spot.
COC freshman Mason Turnbull was next for Canyons with his two-over-par round of 73 to finish second overall. COC sophomore Anthony Nilson tied for sixth with a score of 76 while sophomore Ed Beehag was the final scoring player after finishing the day at 77.
Arnaud Bouhaniche (78-T14) and Carl Magnus Aagren (90-T40) both had their scores dropped from the final team score.
The WSC victory follows the Cougars’ runner-up result at the season-opening Pt. Conception Open held Jan. 25-26. COC trailed only College of the Desert in the 16-team field.
Up next, the Cougars continue conference play Monday, Feb. 16, at the WSC event hosted by Santa Barbara City College at Alisal Ranch Golf Course in Solvang. Tee time is scheduled for 11:30 a.m
