The Santa Clarita Planning Commission approved two sets of documents Tuesday related to the future annexation of a pair of movie ranches in Sand Canyon south of Placerita Canyon Road.
On 5-0 votes, the commission rezoned the property “open space/agriculture” and adopted a special “movie ranch overlay zone” designed to ensure that filming will be allowed to continue unimpeded on the property. It would also plan for the orderly expansion of filming there.
The special zoning document passed with little discussion except to clarify that any included movie ranch has the right to build two new sound stages totaling 40,000 square feet.
For now, the special zoning applies only to the 400-acre Sable Ranch/Rancho Maria and the 200-plus acre Rancho Deluxe, which comprise the bulk of the proposed 630.3-acre annexation.
The overlay zone documents now head to the City Council for final approval. The council voted July 12 to start the annexation process. An annexation application would have to be approved by the Los Angeles County Local Agency Formation Commission before the movie ranches can be added to the city.
