College of the Canyons student-athletes Ana Vasquez (women’s volleyball) and Cesar Tobar (men’s cross country) have been named the COC Athletic Department’s Women’s & Men’s Student-Athletes of the Week for the period running Sept. 25-30. Vasquez and Tobar are the fifth set of honorees for the fall 2023 semester.
Ana Vasquez / Women’s Volleyball
Vasquez enjoyed a strong week on the court in helping the Lady Cougars post a 1-1 record to begin the Western State Conference (WSC), South Division portion of its schedule.
The freshman out of Verdugo Hills High School started the week with a stat line that included six kills, three digs, a blocked shot and a block assist in COC’s 3-1 (25-14, 25-20, 19-25, 25-21) over Glendale College in the conference opener.
Later in the week, it was Vasquez hitting .320 with a game-high 11 kills, alongside a pair of digs and four block assists, in a 3-1 (25-18, 25-18. 23-25, 25-16) loss at Bakersfield College.
Those numbers have Vasquez in a tie for third on the team with 61 kills and a team-best 1.91 kills per set.
Cesar Tobar / Men’s Cross Country
Tobar posted his best time of the season on the 4K course at Oxnard College during the Western State Conference (WSC) Preview meet held Sept. 29.
The sophomore from Bishop Alemany High School was clocked at a season-best pace of 21:24.2 to finish 17th in the individual standings. That time represented an improvement of better than seven seconds from his run on the same course during the Oxnard College Invitational on Sept. 8.
His performance helped the Cougars’ men’s team finish fifth among the 12 competing schools at the conference preview.
