College of the Canyons officials have heard from local residents that door-to-door solicitors, representing themselves as COC students, have been attempting to fraudulently solicit donations by selling books.
Variations of this same scam happen from time to time, with people posing as students and asking for money for various college projects or activities — none of which are real.
According to one resident’s report, on the evening of Saturday, February 1, two individuals identifying themselves as “COC drama students” were going door-to-door in the townhouses surrounding the Vista Valencia golf course in Valencia.
The solicitors asked residents to purchase books from a printed catalog or pamphlet, claiming the proceeds would be used to fund a cross-country trip of some sort.
College of the Canyons does not ask its students to go door-to-door to solicit monetary donations for any reason.
In all likelihood, the people who are engaged in this con are taking advantage of the strong reputation that COC has in the community. It is the college’s hope that no one falls victim to this scam.
Residents should be acutely aware that this is a con and should notify local law enforcement if anyone comes to their doors asking for donations on behalf of the college.
It would be extremely helpful for anyone who comes in contact with these people to ask for identification, try to get a good description of these individuals and report them immediately to law enforcement.
The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station can be reached at 661-255-1121.
