Three incumbent Santa Clarita Community College District board members, Michael Berger, Joan MacGregor and Steven Zimmer are running for reelection on November 5.

Berger, current board president, was initially elected in 2009. He has a long history of community involvement, serving on the College of the Canyons Foundation board, Santa Clarita Planning Commission and SCV Chamber of Commerce. He also has 28 years of financial management experience.

Vice President MacGregor has been on the board since 1993. She served previously as a trustee for the Sulphur Springs School District. As a business owner in the Santa Clarita Valley, she feels that has a connection to residents.

“I think advocacy, I think community networking and partnerships are critical,” she said, “and I feel I have that ability to know the right people and to be able to get things accomplished.”

MacGregor is running again because she wants to maintain continuity on the board and continue the improvements that have been made over the last several years.

“I feel there’s a lot to be done,” she said. “We continue to grow. We have new, exciting programs that keep coming on board, and I feel that during my tenure as a trustee that I’ve accomplished a lot at the college.”

She also noted the importance of continuing to thrive in a tight financial situation.

“The ability for the board to continue to advocate in Sacramento and in Washington is extremely important as far as our funding,” MacGregor said. “We are consistently living with deficit funding from the state. It’s been very difficult to make up for the loss of income and revenue.”

Zimmer is running for reelection after only six months in office. He was appointed by the other board members after Assemblyman Scott Wilk was elected to the state Assembly and vacated his seat.

State law prohibits Zimmer from serving more than 18 months without an election.
