Alexandria, VA — The American Conservative Union Foundation has just released its ratings of the 2018 meeting of the California State Legislature.
According to ACUF’s Year in Review, the California State Legislature overall conservative score fell compared to the 2017 session (from 32.36 percent to 30.56 percent).
ACUF’s Ratings — both federal and state — are an initiative of ACUF’s Center for Legislative Accountability.
These ratings are designed to reflect how more than 8,000 of the nation’s elected officials view the role of government and illustrate the differences between chambers of the legislature while revealing lawmakers’ positions on a wide variety of issues that directly affect Californians.
ACUF reviewed each piece of legislation voted on in both the Senate and House to produce average scores of each chamber as well as individual scores for each sitting member.
California legislators voted on key issues during the 2018 session. In one or both chambers, they voted to raise the minimum age to purchase firearms, jeopardize innovation and free speech by implementing the state’s own version of net neutrality, and weaken election standards.
“In their zeal for socialism during the 2018 session, radical liberals of the California State Legislature voted to eliminate fundamental constitutional rights for Californians,” said ACU Chairman Matt Schlapp. “Liberal lawmakers voted to allow government to limit innovation and free speech by seizing control of the internet and repeal Second Amendment rights for those old enough to serve their country. What’s more, liberals voted to weaken protections against election fraud by allowing same-day voter registration and automatically ‘pre-registering’ teenagers who are not yet old enough to vote. We oppose rolling back the rights provided by the U.S. Constitution and urge California voters to take action to defend their rights and elections against the radical members of the California State Legislature.”
The average score for Republican California assembly members was 83 percent, while just 24 percent of all representatives earned awards for scoring 80 percent or better. Twenty-four percent of California state senators earned awards. The overall average for the California Legislature was 30.56 percent.
