1965 - Signal newspaper owner Scott Newhall shows up for a duel (of words) with rival Canyon Country newspaper publisher Art Evans, who no-shows and folds his paper soon after [story]

The Santa Clarita City Council approved the plans to extend Via Princessa to Golden Valley Road at its Tuesday night meeting.

The extention would bring Via Princessa from its current terminus to the end of Robert C. Lee Parkway next to Golden Valley High School.

A major arterial highway, the road would span about 1.2 miles with six lanes, a 14-foot raised and landscaped median, a 10-foot sidewalk and parkway on each side, and a 12-foot, two-lane bike path along the south side.

“The Via Princessa extension is a vital link in the Santa Clarita Valley. We’ve got to get people to the jobs centers, to school, to work,” said Councilman Dante Acosta.

Via-Princessa-To-Golden-Valley-Road-Extension“(People have said) ‘you guys don’t care about the environment,’ but this is an environmental issue,” he said. “If we have people moving through town, getting to their destinations quickly, then we’re going to lower emissions. We’re going to lower the amount of time and stress that people have. It’s a quality of life issue, as well, and that’s important to me.”

In 2007, the city received $11,577,000 in grant funding for construction, according to a staff report. In 2009, the city began preparing an environmental impact report to determine the preferred alignment and environmental impacts of the roadway, but the project was delayed due to the poor economy.

Tuesday’s approval of the EIR confirmed the project is in accordance with the city’s General Plan.

The project is expected to cost $50 million, and the city is seeking additional grants and funds.

It still has a ways to go before construction begins. A funding plan, construction plan and other parts of the project still need to be created and approved by the City Council.

Looks like all new roads lead to golden valley

  2. Tim Telford says:

In other news, 100,000 new homes will be built in the area to defeat the purpose of clearing up traffic with new roads.

  3. Danny Young says:

Thought it would connect to Wiley Canyon?

  4. Will this affect circle j area?

  5. Emily Ball says:

    Good news!

  6. Karina Leon says:

    Tha’ll be awesome!

  7. Rick Drew says:

That is a picture of the alternative alignment. The road will connect to Golden Valley Rd. Then eventually connect to Wiley Cyn. through Circle J

    • It cannot be put in until the Bermite property has been completely cleared of contaminants. It didn’t really have anything to do with Open Space it was solely on the soil contamination. The project at that time seeking approval was called Porta Bella. Porta Bella developers dissolved or went bankrupt but Bermite is still responsible for clean-up and that is on-going. I see the work every day from my backyard in Circle J.

  8. Thank goodness! Too bad it didnt connect to where the skatepark is.

  9. So how are the people from Vincessa supposed to get out of the gated community to make a left turn now that more cars will prevent us from turning.

  10. That’s lit ? Mitchell Miller

  11. Now let’s see if they hire local

  12. Dwayne Pine says:

    “MasterPlanned”

  13. What happened to connecting up with the Via Princessa that’s in Circle J Ranch?

    • Exactly! It was supposed to be connected what feels like a million years ago.

    • It cannot be put in until the Bermite property has been completely cleared of contaminants. It didn’t really have anything to do with Open Space it was solely on the soil contamination. 14. Kai Ellis says:

    It’s about time!

  15. Why can’t we have any streets that gets straight to the point. Circle here, around there. It takes way too long to get anywhere around here.

  16. Josh Logerot says:

With the water issues it would be great to have more homes

  17. Where is Golden Valley HS located?? Is it near Valley View Elem??

  18. Could we possibly move things along with connecting to Wiley Canyon at the same time? I’m still bitter that I can’t cut through placerita canyon anymore! ?

  19. John Gilbert says:

Wish the City would have adopted the ridgeline preservation ord that Thousand Oaks did. I don’t get how turning the SCV into the SFV will increase the quality of life. When the open spaces are gone, they’re gone….forever.

  20. La Mesa JH has almost a thousand kids walking/crossing Via Princessa one block from a Rainbow Glen, not to mention multiple developments right there. Six lanes will be like a freeway, there’s no water for landscaping the median, and the wildlife that will be displaced will be out of control. Ugh! I remember when SCV was the place to live. (Please no nasty comments necessary- this is my opinion as a resident on the construction path)

  21. As long as there are no Billboards……

  22. I’m guessing that it’ll be completed after my son is no longer going to GVHS. It would definitely be faster getting there if it was completed while he was still going three.

  23. Ugh, we live in Circle J. I’m dreading the traffic and other potential issues/concerns we have once they connect the roads. It’s a nice closed off community which is why we moved here.

  24. That’s nice BUT what ever happened to the plan to extend Via Princessa Newhall to Via Princessa Canyon Country?!?! That was supposed to happen MANY MANY years ago! I know the complaint was that there is the Open Space that no one wanted to build up on, BUT all we need is the road! No one ever wanted businesses or homes along the road that would ruin the Reserve, just more of a way to cut down travel time.

    • Danny Young says:

They don’t need to clean up the whole property for a road.

  25. Ann Aguilar says:

Mike Aguilar we are never gonna be able to get out of our neighborhood when this happens, unless they’re gonna put turning lanes or a stop light ?

  26. FINALLY!
    Carlos Iraheta

  27. Anonymous says:

50 million does not get you much these days

  28. Speeding cars near two schools. Great plan

  29. Dana Samuel says:

Thank goodness this would reduce all the traffic on morning which start from the high school

  30. Jerry Mapoy Cabigas Flordeliza Romano Cabigas

  31. So more homes will be put in along the way bringing more traffic. Yuck!

  32. Lance Iliev says:

What about Via Princessa to Via Princessa/Wiley Canyon? It makes more sense.

  33. This is a futile effort that will only create more traffic. If you notice whenever they build these connectors they always build more residential and multi-unit properties. You think this will reduce travel times but it will only invite more congestion via increased population, which equals more crime, pollution, and stress on scarce resources (i.e. water). Don’t be fooled

    • Of course they r going to add developments and expand. That’s what they do in the SCV or any of these valleys. Growth is going to happen but making people keep turning around and going in circles to get somewhere isn’t the answer either. They r going to build living spaces regardless. The question to ask is what about the 11 million they received in grant money in 2007 where did that go and how long for them to acquire the 50 million (plus cost overruns and change orders) to construct this. And who do they have to buy the property from….Hmmmm. Who’s getting paid. Roads will happen, keeping track of the paper trail is the adventure.

  34. Chloe Sawyer says:

Jerry is that by our house

  35. They will be awakening all that’s buried under the old Bermite site. I hope those workers get to wear haz mat suits and wear specialized masks to protect them.

  36. David Hong says:

    Ruining the city by expanding

  37. Well let’s pray El Niño hits us good because people keep building as if we have the water to support it.

  38. Another bad idea for the 14 freeway

  39. Michael Clack and Nick Clack Traffic is about to get a little busier through the neighborhood

  40. Jack Gratrix says:

no help at all for west bound traffic trying to cross the valley and get to golden valley road further north. Who got $$$ for this decision

  41. Lauren Rome says:

    Erin, have you seen this?!
