The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) crews are out in force keeping Los Angeles and Ventura counties freeways and ramps clear of debris, flooding and snow during this cold, winter storm event. Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol remind motorists to slow down, leave following space between vehicles, and be aware of localized flooding, debris and downed trees. Additionally, there could be chain restrictions in the mountain passes as temperatures drop and rain turns to snow.
The National Weather Service has issued flood advisory alerts for eastern Los Angeles County into the afternoon as rivers and stream levels may rise, and beach hazards statements for minor tidal overflow to Ventura and Los Angeles area beaches. Flash floods could bring mud and debris flows in the burn areas. Snow levels are expected to drop to 3,500 feet tonight, which could impact the I-5 Grapevine and Ventura County mountain highways.
Presently, these are freeways and highways impacted by the storms:
Southbound State Route 1: the left lane is closed between Latigo Canyon and Malibu Canyon roads due to a sinkhole. Expected time of opening is 1 pm.
State Route 33: chain control is in effect between Pine Mountain Inn and Lockwood Valley Road.
Crews prepared for storms by clearing out drainage inlets and storm drains, removing litter and debris, cutting down diseased and dying trees, and stocking sand in snow-prone areas. Please remember to watch out for them and other emergency responders in the event of incidents caused by storms and closures.
