[KHTS] – Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies saved the life of a Santa Clarita man in psychological distress near the edge of a cliff Wednesday, Sheriff’s Station officials said.
Deputies were contacted around 10 a.m. regarding a man who was possibly suicidal, said Lt. Rush, who was watch commander at the station during part of the incident.
The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s Search and Rescue Team was immediately called out to start a search for the man, after receiving the service call. Their talks with the man in distress undoubtedly saved his life, said Deputy Josh Dubin of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
“Regardless of the issue, we want to remind people there are people who care and resources available for help,” Dubin said.

The initial report of the incident was near Sierra Highway and Newhall Avenue, where the man’s car was parked.
Deputies had reason to believe the man left his car and traveled on foot a headed into a rural area to possibly commit suicide.
After deputies had difficulty finding the man, an off-road motorcycle team of deputies, as well as a helicopter unit were deployed at approximately 12:15 p.m. to assist in search efforts.
An off-road motorcycle deputy spotted the man across a deep ravine on top of a ridge line around 1:15 p.m., approximately 2.5 miles southwest from where he had parked his vehicle.
Deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) were deployed on foot along with rangers from the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy to hike the area in an effort to locate the alleged suicidal man.
After several hours of talking with the man, personnel on scene quickly and cautiously approached the man, and simultaneously grabbed the man, preventing him from jumping.
Members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Crisis Negotiation Team also helped talk the man down from a cliff, deputies said.
The rescued man was treated at the scene and was transported to a local hospital, in Sylmar, where him was admitted for a 72-hour mental health observation.

Interesting thread. Thank you for your comments. It’s sort of like yelling at your TV set, though. We are (among other things) the official platform that the agencies use to distribute their information. As stated, this was an LASD photo illustration that LASD distributed with a press release. If you want to change behavior with respect to what information is disseminated to the public, you might want to talk to (in this case) LASD, rather than talking to the platform. Just a thought!
