1772 - Spanish Capt. Pedro Fages arrives; camps at Agua Dulce, Castaic, Lake Elizabeth, Lebec, Tejon [story]
Pedro Fages

Update 1:55 p.m.: The suspect at large who allegedly stabbed a deputy in Canyon Country Friday morning was taken into custody about noon, according to Lt. Becerra at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“He was found across the street by our K-9 unit,” Becerra said, in the backyard of a residence on the 18900 block of Nearbrook Street.

The suspect was identified by officials as Donald Chinchilla, 21, of Canyon Country.

“He’s still at the hospital. He was bitten by the dog, so he’s getting medical treatment,” Becerra said.

Once released from the hospital, Chinchilla will be booked at the SCV Sheriff’s Station for the attempted murder of a peace officer.

The weapon, a large kitchen knife, was recovered near the scene.

Homicide Bureau detectives are now investigating the stabbing.

Update 11:45 a.m.:
“The deputy was stabbed at least one time in the chest. He was transported to a local area hospital where he is in good condition, expected to survive, so we’re grateful for that,” an SCV Sheriff’s Station spokesman said in a news briefing at the stabbing scene in Canyon Country around 11:45 a.m.

“Right now we have an active search going on for this dangerous suspect in the unprovoked attack,” the spokesman said.

“We do know the suspect,” he said. “We’ve had other run-ins with the suspect in the past. He’s got some minor criminal history. “He attacked the deputy unprovoked. The deputy was wearing soft clothing, business attire. He is a detective. He was working and stopped here to use the restroom. He had his name badge on and his (shield) and his soft-holster weapon. The deputy was confronted by the suspect, was asked if he was a deputy. The deputy assumed (the suspect) wanted some help or whatever. Once the suspect confirmed he was a deputy, the suspect immediately stabbed the deputy one time.”

The suspect fled on foot into the neighborhood, he said.

“The deputy was able to get to his car and to the radio and put out his own radio traffic which brought out our deputies in force very quickly to the scene to set up an immediate containment,” he said.

“We were able to quickly identify the suspect due to previous run-ins with him, and we were able to deploy in the area and lock down the whole neighborhood,” he said. “We have field evacuations around the immediate area, and that’s in the 27300 block of Altomere Avenue.”

Canyon Springs Elementary is on a soft lock-down as a precaution.

“We have deputies on campus,” the spokesman said. “There’s no threat to the campus and the students cannot leave, so parent don’t need to worry, the students are fine.”

The suspect was reportedly holed up in a house, “but that’s not confirmed until we get him into custody,” he said.

“We have a number of deputies and resources in the area so there’s no immediate threat to the neighborhood, although obviously the suspect in an unprovoked attack on a deputy is considered armed with at least a knife,” he said.

“So at this point we want residents to stay inside, lock their doors and report anything suspicious or if they see obviously anybody in their backyard running through their backyard,” he said.

“We believe we have him holed up,” he said. “We’ll find out when we’re able to make entry and make contact with him. At this point we haven’t made contact with the suspect. We are deploying our K-9 dogs in an effort to apprehend the suspect as soon as we identify his exact whereabouts. There may be other people in the house and it may be a situation where anybody else is in danger inside the house at this point but we can’t confirm that.”

The spokesman said the identities of the deputy and the suspect were not yet being released. He confirmed there were evacuations of a few residents in the immediate area, along with the school lockdown.

“I’m told we had contact with this suspect just this past Saturday,” he said, but did not have details. Previous encounters with the suspect had to do with minor misdemeanor complaints, but nothing as serious as today’s assault on a deputy.

Special Enforcement Bureau deputies, K-9 units and crisis negotiators are all on the scene, he said.

Deputies have detained one person who came out of the same building where the suspect is believed to be, and are questioning the person about possible information he may have about the suspect, the spokesman said.

When deputies do locate and arrest the suspect, he will be charged with attempted murder on a peace officer for the stabbing, he said.

Original post, 10:55 a.m.:
A Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputy stabbed by an unknown assailant in Canyon Country Monday morning is now being treated at Henry Mayo Memorial Hospital, according to authorities.

The suspect is still at large as of 10:55 a.m.

“The call came in about 10:15 this morning,” said Sgt. Wayne Waterman, SCV Sheriff’s Station Watch Commander.

“Apparently, the deputy was assaulted somewhere near the Jack in the Box at Crossglade and Soledad Canyon Road,” Waterman said. “The suspect fled on foot into the neighborhood.”

Waterman described the suspect as a male Hispanic between 20 and 25, 5’6″ to 5’8″ and weighing 180-200 pounds, wearing a dark blue hoodie and dark blue pants.

“The suspect is still at large,” Waterman said. “Our deputies do have a large containment area set up around the area.”

As to the deputy’s condition, “We have no idea, nothing at this time,” Waterman said. “He’s still being evaluated.” He did not know if the injury was life-threatening.

As of 11:05 a.m., Special Enforcement Bureau personnel were en route to the cross streets of Nearbrook Street and Altamere Avenue to assist in a containment of the area for the outstanding suspect.

  10. Thomas U. says:

What happened is you have more and more ghetto Hispanics moving in…. besides the drug problem plaguing almost everyone esp white suburbia- thank the cholos and cholas ghettoizing this once great city. Welcome to your sanctuary state

  11. Jeanne says:

Very happy the detective is okay. Scary.

What does this have to do with Governor Brown? The suspect is not someone who has been released early.
Sheriff’s dept. says he had only minor misdemeanor complaints. Does not even say if any were convictions for these minor misdemeanors. Sounds like mental issues? Maybe drugs?

  12. Jeanne says:

FYI I’m not defending Jerry Brown, but you can’t throw the kitchen sink at him. Or maybe you can LOL

  13. Jeanne says:

Also the weapon was a large kitchen knife? Did he work in the kitchen at the Jack in the box? Was he wandering around with it? Back to it sounding like a mental condition of some sort. Glad he is off the streets.

  14. Jeanne says:

If he was a gang member he would have a street knife wouldn’t he? A kitchen knife sounds like he was not stable mentally.

  15. Travis Levy says:

LOL taken to the hospital for dog bites. I’m sure there was more than just dog bites. Mess with a Sheriff your going to get lumped up for sure LOL.

  16. SCVTeam says:

Richard, go read a book for once.
