The Los Angeles Dodgers added three players to its roster Friday, Saturday and Monday as the team heads into the final run for a playoff position.
The Dodgers acquired third baseman David Freese in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for minor league infielder Jesus Manuel Valdez on Friday.
Freese, 35, has played in 93 games for Pittsburgh this season, hitting .282 with 29 runs, 10 doubles, one triple, nine home runs and 42 RBI along with a .780 OPS.
The veteran infielder has put up very similar splits against both right-handed and left-handed pitchers, hitting .284 (31-for-109) against southpaws compared to a .281 (36-for-128) mark against righties.
Defensively, he has appeared in 54 games at third base and 15 games at first base this year, posting a combined .977 fielding percentage.
The 10-year Major League veteran was part of the St. Louis Cardinals’ 2011 World Series championship team where he earned the World Series MVP Award. The Corpus Christi, Texas native is a career .274/.347/.413 hitter with 182 doubles, 100 home runs and 497 RBI over 10 big leagues seasons with the Cardinals (2009-2013), Los Angeles Angels (2014-2015) and Pittsburgh Pirates (2016-2018).
Freese was originally selected by the San Diego Padres in the ninth round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft.
Valdez, 20, made his professional debut with the DSL Dodgers this season after signing with the organization on July 20, 2017. In 60 games with the DSL Dodgers Guerrero, he has hit .230 with 44 runs, 11 doubles, four triples, six home runs and 27 RBI along with a .343 on-base percentage.
To create room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers transferred right-handed pitcher Erik Goeddel to the 60-day disabled list (right elbow inflammation).
On Saturday, the Dodgers acquired right-handed pitcher Ryan Madson (#50) in a trade with the Washington Nationals in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Andrew Istler.
Madson, 38, has made 49 relief appearances with Washington this year, going 2-5 with four saves and a 5.28 ERA (26 ER/44.1 IP).
The Long Beach native has been a member of two World Series championship clubs (2008 & 2015) in 13 Major League seasons with the Phillies (2003-2011), Royals (2015), A’s (2016-2017) and Nationals (2017-2018), posting a 61-48 record with 91 saves and a 3.45 ERA in 731 games (18 starts).
Istler, 25, has spent the 2018 season with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City, combining for a 4-4 record, 2.53 ERA in 29 games (one start). He was originally selected by the Dodgers in the 23rd round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft.
To create room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers designated left-handed pitcher Adam Liberatore for assignment.
On Monday, the Dodgers selected the contract of catcher Rocky Gale from Triple-A Oklahoma City (#58).
Gale, 30, appeared in 85 games with OKC this season, where he hit .281 (83-for-285) with four home runs and 34 RBI. Gale has played in 14 Major League games in the 2015 and 2017 seasons with the San Diego Padres prior to being signed by Los Angeles as a minor league free agent on February 25.
The Portland, Oregon native has slashed .262/.306/.331 in 709 games over nine minor league seasons, and was named a Pacific Coast League Mid-Season All-Star with Oklahoma City this year.
To create room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers recalled right-handed pitcher Brock Stewart and placed him on the 60-day disabled list with a right oblique strain.
