Local members of the California Republican Assembly announced their endorsements Tuesday for SCV school and college board seats in the Nov. 8 election.
The CRA is the largest statewide volunteer organization chartered by the California Republican Party. Bob Haueter, deputy chief of staff to Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon and an officer of the state CRA, said the local group and other community members met Tuesday to interview candidates and make their selections.
For the Santa Clarita Community College District (COC), the group endorsed Bruce Fortine for reelection to Seat 4 over Democrat Diana Shaw. Scott Wilk picked up the group’s endorsement for reelection to Seat 5 over challenger Patrick Douglas Hill.
Steve Sturgeon and Gloria Mercado-Fortine were endorsed for reelection to at-large seats on the William S. Hart Union High School District governing board over the lone challenger, Heather Davis.
In the Saugus Union School District, the group endorsed Rose Diaz for reelection and passed on three-term incumbent Democrat Rose Koscielny in favor of first-time challenger Stephen Winkler.
In Canyon Country, the group sidestepped Sulphur Springs Union School District incumbent Shelley Weinstein and challenger Denis F. Defigueiredo to give the endorsement to first-timer Priscilla Lofton.
“All the (endorsed) candidates did an excellent job of laying out a conservative and fiscally responsible agenda for governing our local schools,” Haueter said in a statement.
