WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Kamala D. Harris (D-CA) and Gary Peters (D-MI), both members of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee (HSGAC), sent a letter today to Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross pressing him on the unfilled Director and Deputy Director positions at the Census Bureau ahead of the 2020 Census.
The senators wrote, “The Census Bureau has been without a permanent Director since former Director John Thompson resigned on June 30, 2017, and has been without a permanent Deputy Director since former Deputy Director Nancy Potok resigned in January 2017. This is a critical time for the 2020 Census. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has placed the upcoming decennial census on its High-Risk List because it faces myriad challenges, including massive delays in implementing a complex information-technology infrastructure and historic lows in public trust in government.”
The senators also expressed concern over a report that the Administration intends to appoint Thomas Brunell, Ph.D., to be Deputy Director of the Census Bureau. Dr. Brunell not only lacks the managerial experience needed as the Census Bureau faces critical management challenges ahead of the 2020 Census, but has a partisan work-history that conflicts with the traditionally non-partisan reputation of the Census Bureau.
“The appointment of Dr. Brunell would be a significant departure from past practices and would further undermine the Census Bureau’s efforts to increase public trust in the Census. It would also raise questions about the Administration’s intent to comply with the constitutionally mandated requirement to complete an accurate count of the U.S. population,” the senators continued.
Harris previously questioned Ross at a HSGAC hearing on the 2020 Census, where she pressed him on cuts to personnel and stated that “it is critically important that we put as many resources as possible into improving the confidence that people have about their relationship with their government and the importance of actually being counted.”

I don’t like this, so I’ll not be the first! Recently when I read these SCV news posts I feel A very oblivious, liberal lean to your reporting. Now media should be know as non bias so try to balance your reporting please!
100% agree
They wanna be cool and PC. That means ; be simple and “report” what Socialist politicians have to say.
LIBTARD NEWS—
Correct!!!
Wish we could have simply written a letter stating Harris did not have the experience to be a senator and therefore should not be seated as a senator …
When the source is a press release copied ver batim, laziness might be the motivation.
If we are so paranoid they can’t take the census we really need serious professional help. During my activist years I never got so paranoid I wouldn’t do the basic questions. Name. Age. etc.
Democrats are obsessed with the census bureau because it is linked to their desire to change the demographics of The US… but they got your back.
