1929 - Swift justice: Thomas Vernon sentenced to life in prison for Saugus train derailment & robbery 1 month earlier [story]
Tom Vernon

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. Katie Hill serves as co-chair of the New Democrats’ Housing Task Force, which made public its goals for the 116th Congress on Wednesday. Hill serves alongside Representatives Denny Heck (D-WA) and Ben McAdams (D-UT).

“As the executive director of California’s largest homelessness services nonprofit, I’ve spent my entire career working to address the issue of affordable housing,” said Hill, D-Agua Dulce. “Homelessness is not just one issue – it’s the compound of a broken system. Taking on that broken system and addressing the housing shortage is critical not only for my community, but for my generation. I am so proud to be able to bring my expertise to the New Democrats’ Housing Task Force as we work to make housing more affordable and to end homelessness, together.”

Housing Task Force Mission Statement for the 116th Congress:
America faces a housing shortage that totals millions of housing units across the country. Home prices and rents are rising faster than wages, and construction is not keeping up with demand. The New Democrat Coalition knows affordable housing is paramount to the economic security of American families. The high cost of housing is the single biggest squeeze on household budgets, and a significant drag on the economy. It is forcing Americans to live on the street, reducing GDP by trillions of dollars and substantially reducing Americans’ retirement savings. The Task Force will act to address the housing shortage and pursue solutions that address housing insecurity. These include investing in housing stock as well as addressing land use, inadequate construction financing, and the mismatch of labor supply for the demand.

I reside in your district. I am a disabled senior. I have been residing in a Low Income Affordable Housing complex. Some of the residents have received a rent increase of 5% ($50.00 a month more). In my case, my rent shoots up to more then my Social Security income. So, effective 7/1/19 when I can not pay the $1,030.00 they require, I will be EVICTED and HOMELESS! I get no housing assistance and Housing Authority is NOT accepting any new applications! Management has stated they are exempt from the L.A. County Rent Moratorium with a 3% maximum cap, that they are under the L.I.H.T.C. and thusly, I.R.S. governed. The leases even give themselves the right to raise rents whenever they so choose and for whatever amount, up to 10% increments! . They have corresponded that they are trying to RECOUP some money for excessive plumbing costs recently, due to years of neglect and minimal attempts to repair these massive water floods internally! The air quality is loaded with contaminents! MOLD! Please investigate this management co.as they are practicing these unsafe practices not only in CA. but 13 other states! I formed a tenants association to try to deal with the on-going elder abuse, have approached several agencies, have been ignored, told think politics! Please, you are the last hope we here in Canyon Country have! Please!

  2. Troy says:

They could build low income housing and homeless apt building in Acton land is cheeper than in the city

  3. Sue Wagner says:

You are absolutely right Troy. So maybe Miss Hill will consider that and add to her list of priorities. Homelessness is an issue facing our country not just locally. Having said that … as such … it should be considered not a democratic or republican issue. Maybe the Democrats could reach across the isle and join hands with Republicans to address this NATIONS issue? Maybe or maybe not. To busy with politics …
