RANCHO CUCAMONGA – The Lancaster JetHawks overcame an early five-run deficit to defeat the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, 11-8, in the series finale on Monday night at LoanMart Field.
The JetHawks (5-7, 43-39) took three of four from the Quakes (7-5, 43-39) in the series and pulled back even with them at the top of the South Division standings. Lancaster finished its season-long eight-game road trip at 5-3.
Rancho Cucamonga jumped out to a 5-0 lead before starter Jesus Tinoco had recorded an out in the first inning. Luke Raley blasted a three-run home run and, after a walk, Will Smith hit a two-run shot. The Quakes sent 10 batters to the plate and totaled six hits in the opening frame.
Tinoco rebounded and held the Quakes scoreless over his next four frames to give Lancaster’s lineup a chance to get back in the game.
Mylz Jones tagged up from second base on a Chris Rabago fly ball to right field in the second inning. Quakes right fielder Yusniel Diaz thought he had recorded the final out of the inning and Jones scored from second base as Diaz jogged in. Yonathan Daza scored in the third inning on a wild pitch to bring the JetHawks within three.
Garrett Hampson delivered a two-out RBI-single in the fourth inning to chase Quakes starter Yadier Alvarez. Reliever Parker Curry walked Daza, and Sam Hilliard followed with a three-run home run to push the JetHawks ahead, 6-5. The home run moved Hililard ahead of former teammate Brian Mundell for the Cal League’s RBI lead with 60.
The JetHawks added another run to take a 7-5 lead, but the Quakes rallied for two against reliever Logan Cozart to tie.
Lancaster scored three runs in the seventh inning to take the lead for good. Daza capped the scoring with a two-run single. Cozart (2-2) earned the win. Michael Boyle (2-1) took the loss in relief.
Alexander Guillen struck out in the side in the eighth inning after recording the final out of the seventh.
J.D. Hammer entered with a three-run lead in the ninth and recorded his third save with the JetHawks. Brandon Montgomery led off with a triple and Hammer issued a walk but he struck out Diaz and Raley looking to end the game.
The game took three hours and 56 minutes to complete and was played in front of a sell-out crowd of 4,902, the largest at LoanMart Field this season.
Here’s the box score.
The JetHawks opened a three-game series with Lake Elsinore on Tuesday night at The Hangar.
