The Master’s University women’s volleyball team took down the OUAZ Spirit Saturday, Nov. 8 in a five-set thriller (22-25, 26-24, 25-17, 26-28, 15-13) to win the GSAC regular season title in Suprize, Ariz.
Isabella Amet had a career day with 29 kills as the Mustangs powered past the No. 2 seed in the GSAC to claim home-court advantage throughout the GSAC tournament.
In a back-and-forth matchup, OUAZ claimed the first set, with its middle blockers knocking down 12 Lady Mustang attacks in total. There were six lead changes in the tightly contested first set.
In the second set, TMU overcame an early 8-3 Spirit lead with a 6-1 run. However, nearing the end of the second set, OUAZ still held a 23-20 advantage. The Lady Mustangs then caught fire with a 6-1 run, giving up the one point only via service error. Amet had three of those kills to tie the game at one set a side.
TMU jumped out to a 5-0 lead and used an 8-0 and a 12-3 run to dominate the third set. Kinsley Kollmann had back-to-back kills to put the Mustangs on the verge of a second straight GSAC regular season title.
The fourth set was the closest with both sides trading kills. OUAZ had a 7-2 lead, but it was quickly evaporated by a TMU block. The Lady Mustangs had the lead late into the game, needing just one point to win. But three straight kills from the Spirit sent the game to the deciding fifth set.
The final set remained tight, with eight lead changes. OUAZ surged ahead late in the set, needing just two points to take the win at 13-12. The Lady Mustangs responded, rattling off three straight points to take the set and match win. The win gave TMU the GSAC regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the GSAC tournament.
The GSAC tournament begins on Tuesday, Nov. 11, when TMU will face Life Pacific in The MacArthur Center.
