Deputies searched parking lots at the Westfield Valencia Town Center mall Thursday evening after Macy’s reported a burglary and the suspect fled in an SUV that crashed into a fire hydrant while crowds were taking in a concert.
Early witness reports indicated the suspect might be armed with a handgun, but deputies later said he wasn’t.
As of 11 p.m., the suspect was still on the loose.
Deputies initially detained one possible suspect, but it turned out to be a mall security guard who fit the description.
The suspect is described as a male Hispanic in his 20s, 180 pounds, 5-foot-6 and bald with tatoos on his neck and one of his forearms.

“What we know is that a suspect stole some clothing from the Macy’s and when loss prevention from the Macy’s went to apprehend him, he took off out of the store on foot, got into a vehicle that he was trying to jump start over here,” said Bryan Shreves of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
“The law enforcement showed up and he saw them and took off in the vehicle. As we tried to catch up to him, he knocked over a barricade, crashed the car, ran off on foot and disappeared. We have all the property recovered but we don’t have the suspect in custody,” Shreves said.
