Master's University Women's Cross Country Team wins 1st GSAC title

The Master’s University women’s cross country team entered 2017 hoping to win its first-ever Golden State Athletic Conference championship, and claimed the prize Saturday.

It was more than hope, really. The Mustangs, after all, possessed a promising blend of experience and youth and frontline talent.

Saturday, it all came together in Rocklin for the lowest score in program history, for men or women, and a decisive victory at the GSAC championships.

“They’ve been working for this win for a long time,” said coach Zach Schroeder.

Mustang runners Abigail Frankian, Mikala Fairchild and Rachelle Nelson finished first, second and third overall, respectively, propelling the Mustangs to a 24-47 win over second-place Westmont.

Frankian finished in 17 minutes, 44.9 seconds. Fairchild was close behind at 18:01.8 for the Mustangs.

Rylee Bishop finished sixth overall for Master’s, followed by Ariana Sciarra in 12th.

The Mustangs had run a rehearsal of sorts at Johnson-Springview Park in Rocklin on Oct. 21, taking third in a loaded NAIA field at the Warrior Invitational.

Saturday, when, figuratively, the lights shined brightest – and in reality the rain poured hardest – the Mustangs rose to the challenge.

“My team prepared well,” Schroeder said. “They brought their best today and the Lord gave us the victory.”
