The College of the Canyons Art Gallery will present a collection of works by nationally renowned, Los Angeles-based public artist May Sun, as the first exhibition of the college’s upcoming 45th Anniversary year.
Having been exhibited both nationally and internationally, Sun’s work is primarily based in sculpture, multi-media installation and photography.
The exhibition “In the Studio and Out in Public” will include an integrated body of recent studio work including mixed media installations and paintings, as well as the documentation of Sun’s multiple commissions in the field of public art, which span more than two decades.
“Some of the images in my paintings have a direct connection to the themes in my public art work, while others remain completely autonomous and spring from pure intuition,” said Sun. “Balancing the private and the public makes for an integrated whole.”
Sun has been the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including two National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Visual Artist’s Fellowships, as well as a Getty Fellowship for the Visual Arts.
Her public art commissions include the Hollywood and Western Red Line Subway Station in Hollywood; Union Station Gateway Center, Los Angeles; City Hall in Culver City; Warner Center, Woodland Hills; San Antonio International Airport, San Antonio, Texas; the Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston, Massachusetts and the Robert F. Kennedy Inspiration Park, located at the site of the former Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles.
In addition, Sun’s installation “UnderGround” is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
“May is only the second artist we have shown that has maintained a successful career as a public artist, but this exhibition will showcase both her public and private works,” said Larry Hurst, director of the COC Art Gallery. “I am very excited to have an artist of this stature share her work and her insight with our students.”
The exhibition “In the Studio and Out in Public” will open Tuesday, Sept. 2 and run through Thursday, Oct. 2.
An artist’s reception will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6. A conversation with the artist will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11.
The College of the Canyons Art Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. Those unable to visit the gallery during normal hours are welcome to contact the gallery to schedule a viewing appointment.
