As part of an ongoing workshop series for family caregivers, College of the Canyons and the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center will host their second caregivers workshop at the Senior Center in Newhall on Saturday, October 21 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Presented by Jane McNamara, an elder law attorney in Santa Clarita, the “Coping with Caregiving: Part Two” workshop is designed to help caregivers and others be legally effective advocates and avoid the court.
In this workshop, participants will explore the legal empowerment of the advocate. The focus will be “How to Legally be an Effective Advocate, and Avoid the Court.”
Session One (9 a.m. to 10 a.m.)
· Durable Power of Attorney – what they are and how to use them.
· Advance Health Care Directive – your ticket to advocacy.
· HIPAA Release (for medical information) – avoid the “lockdown” of information.
· POLST (Physician’s Order for Life-Sustaining Treatment) – the new “DNR”
· Trusts – managing finances during illness and incapacity
· Conservatorships – A Failure to Plan: the Court gets involved.
Session Two (10:10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.)
· Common hurdles to overcome when acting as an Advocate.
· Stay out of Hot Water: Your legal duties and requirements as an Advocate.
· Financial and Tax Traps for the unwary Advocate
· Questions And Answers
McNamara will discuss the elder care continuum and how caring for an aging loved one involves legal and medical aspects. Her Santa Clarita Elder Law practice involves asset protection, helping clients evaluate their care options (medical planning, VA benefits, etc.), helping clients with important legal documents such as living trusts, wills, powers of attorney and much more.
