Dr. Marc Winger, longtime superintendent of the Newhall School District, attended his final board meeting Tuesday to cap his 41 years in public education.

The meeting was held at Peachland Elementary School where Winger, 62, began his teaching career.

School board members approved a resolution changing the name of the Newhall District Office building to the Dr. Marc Winger Administration Building.

Over the course of his career, Winger has worked to maintain the arts and music programs when times where tough and also worked to ensure that the district maintained its status as a top-performing school locally and statewide, having led all 10 schools to California Distinguished Schools status, officials said.

“There is not a decision that this man hasn’t made without the help of administrators, parents and teachers that has not been for education,” said governing board member Suzan Solomon.

School district band and choir members played and sang a few songs in honor of Winger, while board members presented him with gifts including books and student art.

Winger has worked in education since 1974 and has served as the Newhall School District Superintendent for 17 years.

During his tenure, the district received national Blue Ribbon School recognition for three schools,; four schools received Title I Academic Achievement Award recognition under the federal No Child Left Behind Act; and nine campuses were named to the California Business for Education Excellence Foundation’s honor roll.

The district also gained voter support for a $35.5 million school construction and modernization bond in 1999, followed by Measure E in 2011 with 66 percent voter approval.

Winger plans to go into executive coaching, specifically helping with the training of school superintendents.

“I have had a great relationship with my school board members,” Winger said. “We can have fun or be serious, and it was always about doing a good job.”
