Dr. Robert “Bob” Albert Nolet, 77, of Valencia, died peacefully on Jan. 22 after a five-year battle with cancer. He served as the former Sulphur Springs Union School District Superintendent for more than 30 years, from 1983-2015.

Nolet was born on Nov. 6, 1948 in Bay City, Mich. to Helen and Albert Nolet, the fifth of six children.

At age 2, his family moved to Sylmar where he spent his childhood.

As a young man Nolet felt called to the priesthood and studied in Missouri but at age 19 he received a new call, one that would allow hime to serve others through education.

He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from California Lutheran University.

He began his education career as a teacher in the Newhall School District, where he taught sixth grade at Peachland Elementary School. He was quickly promoted to Principal of Old Orchard Elementary School.

He joined Sulpher Springs Union School District as Assistant Superintendent of Business in 1981.

In 1983, at age 34, he was promoted to Sulpher Springs Union School District Superintendent and became the youngest school superintendent in the state of California at that time.

Nolet was known for his dedication to his students and school community, said Joyce Carson, a retired Sulpher Springs School District teacher, who worked with Nolet.

His dedication to community service extended beyond the school district. He served on the boards of the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley, Child & Family Center and Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Childrens Cancer.

Nolet is survived by his wife, Gayle, daughter Amber (Andrew), stepchildren Amanda and Evan, daughter-in-law Christian and grandchildren Elena, Nolan, Liam, Bodie, Finn and Duke.

A Celebration of Life will be held for friends and family on Monday, Feb. 16 in Castaic.
