Alysia Montano
Canyon High graduate Alysia Montano advanced to the 800 meter final in the Summer Olympics in London after a fourth-place finish in her semifinal race.
She has the fourth fastest qualifying time in 1 minute, 58.42 seconds. Caster Semanya of South Africa was the top qualifier at 1 minute, 57.67 seconds. The 800 final is Saturday.
Montano is looking to become only the third woman from the United States to medal in the 800 in the Summer Olympics. The last American woman to medal in the 800 was Kim Gallagher, who won a silver medal in 1988.
The United States women’s soccer team won the gold medal, beating Japan 2-1, and avenged a stunning loss in last year’s World Cup final.
Carli Lloyd scored both goals for the United States. She gave Team USA a 1-0 lead in the first half with a goal in the eighth minute. She scored again in the 54th minute.
The U.S. women’s water polo team won the gold medal, downing Spain, 8-5. It was the first time the United States women’s water polo team won gold in the Summer Olympics.
Seventeen-year-old Claressa Shields won a gold medal in boxing by winning the middleweight division. She earned the first gold medal for the United States in women’s boxing.
In basketball, the Lakers landed Dwight Howard in a four-team, blockbuster trade that sent Andrew Bynum to the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Magic, Howard’s former team, get Aaron Afflalo, Al Harrington and Nikola Vucevic. The Denver Nuggets get Andre Iguodala and the Sixers get Jason Richardson along with Bynum.
In baseball, the Dodgers start a weekend series in Miami against the Marlins. It will be the first time Hanley Ramirez plays against his former team.
The Dodgers are a game behind the National League West leading San Francisco Giants, who lost to the Cardinals, 3-1.
Clayton Kershaw is scheduled to start for the Dodgers. Mark Buehrle is on the hill for the Marlins.
