Creation by Lucas Yoshida
A new art form will be celebrated at an artists’ reception Saturday night in Newhall.
The first-ever unofficial Vinylmation art show, featuring hand-painted, one-of-a-kind Mickey Mouse figurines by six local artists is sponsored by Proxart and was organized by artist Cesar Diaz.
The Customation Project – a play on the name for the figurine and the unique designs featured in the show – will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. at Romo Studio, 22508 6th Street, Suite B.
Some of the vinylmation figures will be auctioned and raffled off to raise funds for Autism Speaks.
Artists involved in the project include Diaz, Celeste Villanueva, Chelsey Zhang, Lucas Yoshida, Jesus Paez and Angie Annett .
Each artist has a unique style and most of the works could be sold at places like the Magic Kingdom, but some of them are edgy and not quite family friendly.
The exhibit is not sanctioned by Disney.
Yoshida has been painting since he was a youth and did a lot of comic book work before turning to oils last year.
His website features more than cartoon characters; skulls and superheroes seem to populate his design portfolio. A visit to Disneyland where the 3- and 9-inch figurines are offered both with designs and as blank 3-dimensional canvases inspired him to try something new.
