1988 - One-month-old Santa Clarita City Council votes to form Planning Commission [minutes]
meeting minutes

| Monday, Feb 16, 2015
[Feb. 16] – Each year SCOPE (Santa Clarita Organization for Planning and the Environment) members focus on 3 or 4 environmental or planning issues that seem to be of most concern for our community. This year SCOPE members filled a local pizza restaurant and ate while they worked. Several short term strategic issues where discussed, and will be sheparded by volunteers, in addition to the long-term campaign goals. Some of these include school presentations on the local environment and pesticide use in the river and the schools, and a guest speaker on local native birds.

The focus goals will be:
1. The Santa Clara River (of course!) – including water quality, supply and Newhall Ranch

2. Food and Water Safety – including waste water well injection and pesticides

3. Air Quality – including effects on children’s health (asthma) and air pollution from the
Chiquita Canyon Landfill and proposed Expansion.

Why the landfill will be a focus issue:

dodgers_stadium comparison

Chiquita Canyon Landfill located about 3 miles west of the I-5 freeway on Highway 126, immediately across the Santa Clara River from the proposed Newhall Ranch project, is planning to increase its footprint by nearly 40% and more than double its tonnage intake. How will this affect the surrounding communities and the Santa Clarita Valley at large? For one thing it will addChiqauitaIMG_0590 substantially more truck trips and air pollution to our Valley. Much of the trash is coming from outside Santa Clarita, but our Valley will bear the impacts. Many residents of the immediately adjacent community of Val Verde believe their health has been affected by leaking landfill gases. In a 1997 agreement made between the community and Newhall Land and Farming, they were promised that the landfill would be closed in 2019. Instead this massive expansion is proposed. Visit the Citizens website to find out just who are the surprising supporters of this dump expansion in our Valley.

Did you know that the Los Angeles County Sanitation District is proposing to place a waste water injection well in the Valley Oaks Savannah next to the Tournament Players golf course. SCOPE is concerned with this location due to potential ground water pollution and impacts on the conservation area. Local homeowners are worried because the wells will extend right under their homes. There is some evidence that such wells may cause earthquakes or subsidence. This is your opportunity to ask questions and become informed. You can read about the proposal here.

  1. Kevin D. Korenthal says:

What about the Cemex Soledad Canyon Mega-Mine and the California High-Speed Boondoggle?

  2. So Lynn is trying to imply that this landfill will be expanding into Elysian Park?

  3. I mean I am not thrilled with the landfill expansion, I think we are being treated with total disdain, but Lynn using falsehoods is no better.

  4. Ken Pfalzgraf says:

More often than not, the work of environmental activists does not result in a development or a plan being shut down but instead improved so that all parties win in the end. Thanks for watching out for us Lynne Plambeck

    • SCVNews.com says:

Often, yes, but this is a case where the county allowed the landfill to expand in 1997 on the CONDITION that it WILL close in 2019. Now the landfill is trying to persuade the county to change its mind retroactively. So there’s nothing to “improve” in this instance. It’s more about honor.

  5. Abigail says:

Thank you SCOPE for not turning a blind eye to all that is happening here in our valley. Many of these issue can use both – improvement and honor as they happen to be lacking in both.
